CIDA extends the RGD Project until 2012
The Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) has granted CUI, the executing agency of the RGD Project, a 29-month funded extension to its programming on regional economic development in Ukraine. This extension was announced by the Right Honourable Stephen Harper, Prime Minister of Canada during his official visit to Ukraine in October 2010.
Over the next few years, CUI’s RGD team will work with its Ukrainian partners to establish an in-service training program on regional economic development for 600 civil servants from 13 oblasts across Ukraine. The training will improve the capacities of local leaders and civil servants to promote sustainable economic development, close the country’s infrastructure deficit, and manage regional finances more effectively.
CUI’s RGD team will also assist Ukraine’s Ministry of Economic Development and Ministry of Regional Development, Construction and Housing to update the State Strategy for Regional Development, the national policy that provides a framework of action on regional economic development until 2015.
CUI has had active programming in Ukraine for several years. Since 2005, we have supported the reform of the country’s legislation related to regional economic development, and assisted two regional governments to formulate and implement strategic development plans with the involvement of 38,000 citizens. We have also supported the development of 60 projects that promote environmental stewardship, tackle the infrastructure deficits, and stimulate regional growth. With CUI assistance, our local partners have leveraged over $5.5 million in funding from local, national and international sources to implement these projects.
CIDA’s extension to CUI’s programming in Ukraine is part of a broader package of Canadian development assistance to Ukraine. Canada has committed $36 million in funding for six projects that improve Ukraine’s customs service, job training, municipal economic development, regional and national economic development planning, and juvenile justice reform.
